модальне дієслово can (в минулому часі  (Past Simple) — could, в майбутньому часі — to be able to!!!! 

Вживається для вираження:

1. Розумових або фізичних здібностей.

Can you drive? — Ти можеш водити машину?

Bungalows are for old people who can not climb the stairs. — Котеджі призначені для літніх людей, які не можуть підніматися по сходах.

She can speak Japanese. — Вона може говорити по-японськи.

2. Об’єктивно існуючої можливості.

Nobody can buy health and happiness. — Ніхто не може купити здоров’я і щастя.

One can not love and be wise. — Не можна любити і розумно мислити одночасно

You can not please all of the people all of the time. — Ти ніколи не зможеш догодити всім відразу.

3. Дозволи, прохання, заборони.
Вираз дозволу або прохання за допомогою модального дієслова can можливо лише в стверджувальних або питальних реченнях. А ось в негативних пропозиціях формаcan not = can not є показником заборони.

Can I keep your book till Sunday? — You can not, it is not mine. — Я можу залишити твою книжку до завтра? — Ні, не можеш. Вона не моя.

You can not put new wine in old bottles. — Не можна розливати нове вино в старі пляшки.

Can you lend me your car? — Ти не міг би позичити мені свою машину?

Форма модального дієслова can в минулому часі — could — в цьому випадку буде показником більш ввічливого прохання. Тобто could можна вживати в теперішньому часі при вираженні прохання і це перекладатися буде як "чи не міг би ти"

Could you do me a favour? — Ви не могли б зробити мені послугу?

Щоб з легкістю орієнтуватися у вживанні модального дієслова can / could для вираження дозволу, прохання, можна запам’ятати наступні зразки:

Can do now — може зробити зараз

Could do then — міг зробити тоді

Could do now — міг би зробити(ввічливіше!!!!)

Використовуй правило:       Обставини часу, як правило, розташовуються між допоміжним та основним дієсловом

(just, already, ever, never тощо) або в кінці ре­чения (today, yet, so far, this week тощо).

Yet вживається тільки в заперечних та питальних реченнях.
